William Francis Scherz

February 4, 1938 ~ June 24, 2015 (age 77)
William (Bill) Francis Scherz, 77, died peacefully, at his home, Wednesday morning June 24, 2015. Bill had suffered a serious stroke in August of 1999. He was diagnosed with a slow moving cancer contributing to his passing.

Bill is survived by his wife Linda A. , daughters Theresa (Chris) Smiedy and Kim Canino, stepson Rod Griola, sister Barbara Hyman and sister-in-law Josie Scherz, 4 grandchildren Brandon, Billy, Sarah and Zoe, 1 great-grandson Maddux and several wonderful nieces, nephews. His was predeceased by his brother Joseph Scherz Jr. in 2014.

Bill is the second son of Joseph and Mary Scherz, born February 4, 1938 in Syracuse, NY. He grew up on the north side of Syracuse and in the 50's moved to North Syracuse on Waterbury Drive and graduated from North Syracuse High School in 1955. He worked at Crouse Hinds for a few years, but decided working for someone else was not his cup of tea. He set out to open his own repair/gas station in North Syracuse in the 70's and started Bill's Auto Service. In the 80's he moved his business to Cicero and eventually Brewerton where he concentrated on his towing empire until 2000 when he retired. He rescued 1,000's of stranded motorists, owned a junkyard and an auto auction. He cared for his customers and friends as if they were family.

Bill was an avid bowler, bowling in many tournaments and a regular patron at his beloved Bowling Green Lanes. He bowled there on Fridays in a men's league and on Saturday he and Linda bowled in a mixed league there for many years and in many tournaments. If Bill wasn't busy repairing or towing cars during the day you would find him at the lanes having a cup of coffee with his friends. He loved being on the water in his boat so much that in 1980 Bill bought a house on the Oneida River, where he could enjoy the water host many a clambake, parties and poker games with family and friends. He was loved by everyone who knew him and Bill was always up for a party.
